Warm up in Austin This Winter

Winter is officially here in New York. The temperatures are dropping, the tree is up in Rockafeller Center, and snow is here. While the holiday is season is magically in New York City, by January that festive glow has faded and the city becomes cold and dreary. There’s no better time to escape to the warm south, and Austin is the perfect place to heat things up, with lively nightlife, spicy Tex-Mex and warm weather.

There are plenty of things to do in Austin to keep you busy for at least 4-5 days. Catch some live music, visit the state capitol building or the Austin Museum of Art, take a ride on the Austin steam train, or play in one of the many nearby parks. San Antonio is just a short drive away and makes for a great day trip, as does a journey into the local hill country or to visit some of the area wineries. And don’t forget the food and drink. Austin is a great city for foodies, with excellent Tex-Mex, BBQ, and a strong food-cart scene.

There are often some great deals from New York to Austin, with many airlines offering direct flights between the two cities. While you’ll need a car if you plan to leave the city, it’s easy to get around within Austin via public transportation. And hotels in Austin can be very affordable, making Austin an ideal low-cost warm-weather getaway for a long weekend from New York.
