New York City Apple Day

In a city that always seems to be ripping the money out of your pockets, I am always happy when I can find FREE things to do in New York City. Add to that anything fall themed (it’s my favorite season) and I’m a happy camper. On Sunday, October, 19, the Big Apple is celebrating the Big Apple with…apples. The Lower East Side is turning its apple green with the first annual New York City Apple Day and the Go Green Lower East Side Kick off on Sunday, October 19 from 11:00 am to 4:30 pm. This FREE festival will take place in the middle of what used to the Delancey Apple Orchard in the mid 1700s on Orchard Street between Broom and Grand Streets. Honoring its past, commemorating its namesake and celebrating the present season, this festival will have lots of great apple themed treats to taste as well as fun and family-friendly activities.

Activities at the Event:

  • There will be a real, old-fashioned apple press, so festival goers can sample fresh pressed apple cider.
  • Live honey beehive
  • Face painting
  • Arts and crafts
  • Historical neighborhood walking tours
  • Samples of everything apple—try samples of apple bread, apple chicken sausage, apple truffles, even apple dog biscuits (well, you may not want to actually sample these, but your pet might)
  • The Go Green Lower East Side and Sierra Club will also be giving away 500 energy efficient lightbulbs, t-shirts and tips on going green
  • Rabbai Stone for the Chabad of the Lower East Side will be present to celebrate the harvest holiday of Sukkot with an apple and honey tent.

Even if you just stop by this festival for the free samples of delicious food, you will have come out ahead. Plus, there are definitely worse ways to spend an October Sunday than strolling the streets of New York, eating free food and celebrating the autumn season.
