Midtown

by Cristina

Midtown Manhattan is the core retail and commercial neighborhood of the Big Apple, home to most of the city’s hotels, the Broadway Theaters, Times Square , the United Nations, the Empire State Building and other important sights. Most of the hotels and restaurants in this area are overpriced.

How to get to Midtown

There’s no shortage of subway service in this area. The 4, 5, and 6 lines travel under Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue; while the B, D, F, and M lines run under 6th Avenue. The E and M lines travel under 53rd Street, the 7 and S lines run under 42nd Street and the N, R, and Q lines also serve the area. Most of them stop at Grand Central Station.

You can also travel to the neighborhood and within it by MTA buses which run on every large avenue. Express buses also stop along the large avenues. Local buses charge $2.25 (adult, one way).

Facilities

This area is definitely going to put some holes in your pocket should you decide to choose to stay here. Hostels near Times Square can be a good choice but make sure to book ahead.

What to do

There is no shortage of things you can do in Midtown, even if you don’t plan to spend a lot of money. Grab a camera, put on your walking shoes, get a map and take photos of interesting buildings, known for their architecture, such as: the Chrysler Building , the Empire State Building, the Grand Central Terminal , The New York Public Library, the St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the Rockefeller Center.

When you are tired of the hustle and bustle of the city, relax in one of the parks; Bryant Park is great if you want to kill some hours and still catch up with friends (there’s free wi-fi). Greenacre Park is a small park and definitely a lovely place to relax.

Spend some time exploring the museums located in the neighborhood, such as the American Folk Art Museum and the Museum of Modern Art.

And since you are in New York’s commercial district, don’t leave Midtown without enjoying some…shopping. Fifth Avenue is always filled with locals and travelers looking for something to buy.
